Community Health Awareness: VSU Cares 2013

Since starting my career in the dental industry, I have become increasingly aware of how vital proper oral health and affordable insurance are. For many families, the rising cost of insurance and the challenge of maintaining quality, affordable health care—including dental—are major concerns.
When even basic health coverage strains household budgets, dental insurance is often seen as an unnecessary extra and is left out. There is also a lingering perception that dental insurance is less essential than general health insurance. Although society is gradually moving away from this outdated view, visiting the dentist is still too often considered a luxury or an optional add-on to primary health care. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
Getting an oral health exam is just as important as having a physical exam. Good oral health impacts not only our teeth but also our overall well-being. The mouth is the primary gateway for most pathogens and diseases entering the body. In fact, the first signs of illnesses—such as cancer or vitamin deficiencies—are often discovered during oral exams by dental professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. Numerous organizations and initiatives are working collaboratively to raise public awareness about the importance of oral health and to bridge disparities in access to dental care by offering quality, low- or no-cost dental and health services, as well as educational programs within communities.

Not long after completing my internship, I discovered volunteer opportunities with various organizations for dental students interested in donating their time. One notable option is through the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF), a nonprofit organization that provides dental care for Virginians. According to their website, "The VDAF accomplishes this mission through its three programs: Missions of Mercy, Donated Dental Services, and Give Kids A Smile."

After conducting some research, I learned that the Mission of Mercy (MOM) project had recently partnered with a university in my area to launch the VSU Cares program. There were only three volunteer slots left, so I immediately signed up for this year’s event. While I feel nervous, I am genuinely looking forward to serving the community and challenging my current knowledge and skills as a student.
